Who Can Apply for Citizenship?
There are some minimum criteria you must meet to become citizen of Canada. These are:
- You are a permanent resident of Canada
- You’ve lived in Canada for at least 3 years (1095 days) out of the last 5 years
- You’ve filed income tax returns to CRA in Canada for at least 3 years during the 5 years right before you submit the application
- You pass the citizenship test( for 18-54 years old)
- You meet the language requirements( for 18 t0 54 years old). English or French.
You must pass the citizenship test if you’re between 18 to 54 years old on the day you sign your application. You can practice the test on the free government resources provided online. The test is simple and tests your knowledge on the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizens plus Canada’s history, geography, economy, government, laws and symbols.
Application Fees
The application fees for the adult (18 years or older) is $649.75. For the Minor(under 18 years) is $100.
Application Process
1.Check your eligibility-Use the IRCC tool.
2. Gather all of your required Documents.
- PR card copy. You can apply with expired PR card.
- Your 2 IDs. Your IDs must be valid. Your valid passport is considered.
- Your Citizenship size photographs. Must be of required specifications.
- Police clearance certificates (may be required).
- Your English/French Language documents.
3.Complete your application on the online account. You can also choose to apply on paper. Pay the application fees and include the receipts then submit the application.
4. Prepare for citizenship test and give citizenship test. You need to get 15 out of 20 questions right to pass.
5. You may be required to provide fingerprints.
6. You may be invited for interview.
7.Invitation for oath. If your application is approved you will be invited for oath of citizenship. After you take the oath and complete the document process you become citizen of Canada. You have 2 options either virtual or in person citizenship ceremony.
The average processing time of citizenship application is 10 months as per IRCC. You can choose paper certificate or E-certificate. After becoming citizen you can register to vote and you should be active in your community.
