Canada has seen recent spike in asylum claims for international graduates in Canada near the end of their status. To curb this exploitation Canada has launched new Immigration bill which will make these claims ineligible.

If someone makes asylum claim more than one year after entering Canada(on or after June 24,2020), their claim will not be referred to the IRB. This applies to International Students, Temporary foreign workers, Visitors(Even if they left and re entered Canada during this period)

Anyone of crosses the USA Canada border and makes asylum claim after 14 days of entry will also become ineligible for IRB referral. But they can still apply for pre risk assessment if they fear harm upon return to their home country.

This Strong Border Act 2025 will help in

  • Modernizing the immigration screening and enforcement technologies.
  • Reduce delays in processing asylum and refugee claims
  • Prevent abuse of the immigration system
  • Improve cooperation between federal and provincial authorities.
